Self portrait with Camera Obscura- the Batman pose
Recently, I converted a room in my house into a Camera Obscura. It was done by blacking out the window, killing off any light coming through the door, window, and vents until the room was totally lightproof. I then made a small hole in the special cover that I made for the window. Et voila, a delicate beam entered the darkened space and faintly illuminated the wall directly across from the hole. As my eyes adjusted to it, the smudgy image resolved itself into black & white and finally into colour. The colour after a while intensified and became Velvia rich.
As an experiment, I tried a self portrait. This is the result. While the very faint moving image of outside was being displayed on the internal wall opposite the window, I tried to capture a self portrait of myself outside with my Nikon D200 inside the camera obscura pointed at the image.
I focussed the D200 on the faint image on the wall & set the camera to timer. Then, pressing the button, I legged it outside to stand as still as I could.
This proved difficult: neighbour after neighbour passed by and said "Hello" every time I tried it. This is the best result as it's difficult to talk out of the side of your mouth to your neigbour and stay absolutely still for 30 odd seconds.
You need a very, very sunny day for the thing to work, and we've forgotten what the sun looks like over here in Ireland for the last couple of months.... But with a bit of luck, I'll get a better one before the summer is out.
As for Batman.... Why is the image upside down and reversed? Well, read up on Camera Obscura!! In the meantime, if you want to see if it worked tilt a mirror at 45 degrees in front of your computer monitor and you'll see me right way up and right way round...
A few people have asked to see the camera set-up I used to create the star bokeh, including the cutout on the lens. Well, here it is, in all its do-it-yourself glory!
There's really not much of a trick to it, though to make it easier on myself, I measured my lens first and then created a template on my computer. After that, it was simply a matter of cutting it out and taping it (lightly) to the camera lens.
What you see here is a mirror shot (which I reversed), showing the camera and lens cutout, as well as a little bit of bokeh stars in the background.
